shmu is part of BFI Film Academy Scotland, a new regional Hub for aspiring filmmakers aged 16-25, connecting young people across Scotland with opportunities to develop creative skills, build industry networks, explore career pathways and take part in film activity throughout the year. 

Whether you're interested in filmmaking, storytelling, production, or content creation, the Hub offers a range of ways to get involved, from workshops and industry events to hands-on training opportunities.

BFI Film Academy Scotland is delivered by Screen Education Edinburgh in partnership with screen organisations across Scotland, supported by the UK Government, National Lottery and Screen Scotland funding.

There are three ways to get involved with your local Hub:

1.Free Introductory Courses (for those aged 16-19)

Work as part of a team to make your own short film and learn about different roles in the industry.  Scroll down for course details and dates for shmu in Aberdeen and North East Scotland and to apply.

2.Free Year-Round Membership (for those aged 16-25)

BFI Film Academy Scotland Free Introductory Course at shmu in Aberdeen and North East Scotland

If you are:

  • Aged 16 to 19
  • Living in Aberdeen or the North East of Scotland
  • Passionate about film

This course is for you.

No previous filmmaking experience is needed - just a passion for film.

Our Introductory Courses are free to attend, with bursaries available to help cover travel and other costs.

What you'll do

Over 16 days, you'll join a community of aspiring filmmakers and work together to create, produce and screen a short film while developing practical filmmaking skills.

You will:

  • Explore idea generation, screenwriting and story pitching
  • Learn hands-on cinematography, sound recording, directing and editing
  • Build confidence, make industry connections and work as part of a creative team
  • See your finished short film on the big screen

Course dates

The BFI Film Academy Scotland Introductory Courses begin in October 2026. Dates for the course delivered by shmu in Aberdeen are below.

  • October - Sat Oct 3, Mon 12 - Fri 16, Sat 24, 31
  • November - Sat 7+8 (Production), Sat 21+22 (Production) Sat 28
  • December - Sat 5, Sat 12, Sat 19

Sessions will take place from 09:30am to 16:30pm, with times for shoot days to be confirmed during delivery.
