The future of the film industry rests on spotting talent and developing that talent, with BFI Film Academy Short Courses an excellent start towards a career in the screen industries, where an interest in film and the filmmaking process is nurtured and grown for ambitious 16- to 19-year-olds. 

This high-quality course develops your understanding of the fundamentals of filmmaking, from screenwriting, cinematography and sound, to directing, production and editing. 

You will make short films, learn from top talent working in the industry through masterclasses, and gain commercial and cultural knowledge to begin your journey towards a career within the screen industries.  

Through completion of this course, you will gain the BFI/Screen Skills NCFE Preparing to Work in the Film Industry level 5 equivalent qualification, benefitting your professional development, whether through further film study or entering the workplace. 

Participants also become part of a BFI Alumni group which opens additional training opportunities across the UK, as well as coming together with participants from across Scotland for a shared screening and networking event, whilst also gaining insight from course alumni employed in the screen sector. 

No previous experience is necessary – just a passion for film. The course is free to take part, with bursaries available for those who require assistance with travel costs. 

The BFI Film Academy Scotland Short Course Programme 2025-26 is delivered by a consortium of organisations working together to develop young people aged 16 to 19 across the Nation, with courses in Edinburgh delivered by lead partner Screen Education Edinburgh, and at partner orgs in Ayrshire delivered by Ayrshire Film Co, in the Scottish Highlands delivered by Eden Court Highlands, in Glasgow delivered by GMAC, and in Aberdeen delivered by Station House Media Unit.   

For young people living in  Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, the course will take place at shmu on the following dates: 

September 2025 – 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th 

October 2025 – 4th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th    

November 2025 – 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th.   

December 2025 - 6th, 13th. 

Sessions will take place from 10am to 5pm.
