Interview with US hip hop star J. Cole
On Thursday the 7th of November, DJ Kojo interviewed American hip hop artist, songwriter and producer J. Cole on his show Urban Swag – which airs every Thursday from 8-10pm.
After his first mixtape was released in 2007, J. Cole was contacted by Jay-Z and subsequently signed to Jay-Z’s own record label Roc Nation. His debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, was released in 2011. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, Top R&B Albums and Top Rap Albums chart, selling more than 218,000 copies in its first week.
J. Cole’s lyrics touch on everything from his upbringing in North Carolina to the poverty and hopelessness that affect his community. He began writing his own lyrics at 15, and as he did not have a DJ or producer, he started creating his own beats using an 808 beat machine that he received as a present from his mother. From then on J. Cole has been constantly creating new music.
J. Cole will be visiting the UK during his upcoming tour in promotion of his latest album Born Sinner, performing at the O2 Academy in Glasgow on the 7th of December.
