Free home safety equipment

Keep your ears glued to shmuFM this February.  Tune into our community shows and hear all about a fantastic project which provides and fits free home safety equipment to families who receive certain benefits.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) has launched a Scotland wide pilot project, providing safety equipment to families in specific areas across the country. The Scotland’s Home Safety Equipment Scheme is based upon the success of a similar project in England which ran from 2009 – 2011.

The project in Scotland will supply and fit safety equipment to over 800 families, and each one will receive a resource pack with guides and information about home safety, and how accidents can be prevented. The equipment provided includes safety gates, window restrictors, non-slip bath or shower mat, fire guard, locks for kitchen cupboards, corner cushions, blind cleats and sort door jammers.  The scheme will raise awareness of safety in the home and contribute to the health and wellbeing of children across Scotland.

The local charity involved with the Aberdeen sector of the project is absafe, local safety awareness charity, who promotes safety awareness in the community and is based at the North East Scotland College at the Gallowgate.
